Summary

A mathematical theory of communication is presented, extending previous work by Nyquist and Hartley, to include the effects of noise and the statistical structure of the message. The fundamental problem of communication is reproducing a message at one point from another, with the system designed to operate for all possible selections. A logarithmic measure of information is used, with the choice of base corresponding to the unit of measurement, such as binary digits or bits. A communication system consists of an information source, transmitter, channel, receiver, and destination, with the goal of transmitting a message from the source to the destination. The theory is developed for discrete, continuous, and mixed systems, with applications in communication theory, computing machines, and telephone exchanges.
