Summary

Researchers developed a complete CO2 ice clouds model for Global Climate Models (GCMs) and mesoscale models, focusing on Martian CO2 cloud formation, abundance, and features. CO2 clouds form in the troposphere at the poles during winter and at equatorial latitudes in the mesosphere, requiring extremely low temperatures and aerosol particles for condensation. A specific bin microphysics scheme was developed, using heterogeneous nucleation and computing growth rates of activated CO2 ice particles. The scheme was implemented in the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD) GCM, with a two-moment bulk parameterization predicting total mass and number density of CO2 ice crystals. Simulations used temperature profiles with gravity-wave induced cold pockets, producing ideal conditions for CO2 cloud formation in the mesosphere. Results showed cloud formation and evolution, with rapid decay when supersaturation conditions were no longer met.
