Summary

Darwin's theory of coral reef formation is tested by boring into an atoll to determine if coral grows downward or if chalky ooze is present at greater depths. A committee is formed to investigate an atoll, and Funafuti is chosen for the task. The geologist Professor Phillips is discussed, who was initially opposed to Darwin's theory of evolution, but later attempted to construct a phylogeny of animal groups. Phillips' rejection of the theory was partly due to the excessive duration of geological time it postulated, an argument that still holds weight today.
