Summary

Researchers used fMRI to study brain regions involved in learning letters in adulthood, specifically the association between letters and speech sounds. They found that the left posterior inferior temporal gyrus (PITG) and parieto-occipital cortex (PO) showed selective activations when adult subjects learned to associate Hangul letters with speech sounds, but not with nonspeech sounds. The left PITG showed increased activation over two days, predicting individual performance improvement, and functional connectivity between the left PITG and PO was enhanced. These results demonstrate that a new link between orthography and phonology is formed by the plasticity of a functional system involving the left PITG and PO.
