Summary

The Guadalupe Nipomo Dunes Complex, a large coastal dune tract in California, is being degraded by invasive perennial veldtgrass, which is converting the natural shrub-dominated ecosystem into a grassland. Despite 10 years of control efforts based on the theory of biotic resistance, the Dunes Collaborative has failed to restore the coastal dune scrub habitat. A new management strategy, based on the theory of biotic acceptance, focuses on creating defensible spaces as buffers around critical habitat areas to minimize weed seed introductions and preserve biodiversity.
