Summary

Community supported agriculture (CSA) aims to shift the paradigm in agriculture towards social justice, fairness, and participation, but its long-term existence can be challenged by generating sufficient income for fair salaries. A study of eight CSAs in Switzerland found that organisers often have enthusiastic ideas, but members take a more pragmatic approach, and information flow from members to organisers is key to overcoming divergence in expectations. Involving members in administration and fieldwork lowers organisers' workload and fosters social interactions, increasing social capital. Focusing on local embeddedness and co-creation between members and organisers is more beneficial for CSA's long-term existence than rigidly implementing the initial vision.
