Summary:

Cyd-X® HP is a novel, environmentally friendly biological insecticide from Certis USA. It utilizes highly potent occlusion bodies (OBs) of the Cydia pomonella granulovirus (CpGV), which naturally infects and kills codling moth (Cydia pomonella) larvae.

Key Features:

- Mode of Action: CpGV is microencapsulated within OBs, protecting it from degradation. Larvae ingest OBs, leading to viral release, cell penetration, DNA "hijacking," rapid replication, and eventual death.
- Virulence: A single OB is sufficient to cause a lethal infection in half of codling moth larvae tested. Cyd-X® HP contains nearly one trillion OBs per ounce.
- Transmission: CpGV spreads through ingestion of virus released from dying larvae, horizontal transmission (larvae infecting other larvae), vertical transmission (mother to offspring), and latent infections (virus lying dormant until stress triggers an outbreak).
- Host Specificity: Highly specific to codling moth; ineffective against other insect species at the required doses. Noninfectious to beneficial insects, wildlife, livestock, or humans.
- Production: Produced by infecting mass-reared codling moth larvae with CpGV, then homogenizing and filtering the virus-killed larvae into a suspension with glycerol for stability.
- Application: Listed for use in organic orchards by OMRI and NOP. Application rates vary based on target stage (larvae vs. fruit), weather conditions, and orchard canopy density. Typically applied at 0.5 to 3 fl. oz. per acre.

The OBs, measuring 400 x 200 nm, are microencapsulated, protecting the virus from degradation until ingested by the moth larva, where the alkaline digestive environment dissolves the OBs, releasing the virus to penetrate cell membranes.
