Summary

Perchlorate salts may form aqueous solutions on Mars due to low eutectic temperatures and ability to absorb water vapor and deliquesce. Researchers studied deliquescence of perchlorate/chloride mixed salt systems using Raman microscopy, finding that deliquescence occurs gradually and the deliquescence relative humidity (DRH) is a linear combination of the DRH of pure salts. All mixtures contained an aqueous phase by 38% RH, and the eutonic relative humidity (RHeut) was 38% for the NaClO4/NaCl system. The presence of NaCl raises the DRH slightly, but an aqueous phase forms at a similar RH as pure NaClO4. The study's findings have implications for understanding environmental conditions that allow aqueous solutions to form and persist on Mars.
