## ABSTRACT

This article introduces a novel stellarator configuration termed the double helix stellarator (DHS). DHS exhibits several unique characteristics, including extreme low plasma aspect ratios (A ≈ 1-1.17), significant rotational transform, and the ability to achieve extreme-high-P MHD equilibria. Unlike traditional stellarators, DHS features a double helix centre post, resulting in high enclosed volume, absence of noticeable magnetic islands, and improved particle transport due to the lack of a magnetic field ripple on the outboard part of the torus. The compactness, simplicity, and modularity of the DHS coil system make it advantageous for fusion applications. This paper presents an initial demonstration of DHS's advanced characteristics, including results for finite plasma pressure and current regimes, highlighting its potential for controlled fusion.
