Summary

EP-cadherin is a Ca2+-dependent adhesion molecule in Xenopus laevis embryos, sharing homology with mouse E- and P-cadherins. It is expressed in oocytes, eggs, and blastomeres, increasing in non-neural ectodermal cells, somites, and notochord during gastrulation. Expression declines in the nervous system during neurulation but persists in endodermal cells and decreases in migratory cells. In later development, EP-cadherin is prominent in epidermis and skeletal muscle, disappearing from muscle tissue after metamorphosis. It is often coexpressed with E-cadherin in epidermal cells but has a different subcellular distribution, suggesting distinct roles in tissue differentiation and morphogenesis.
