Summary

Hip fractures are a major cause of injury and death among the elderly, with over 350,000 occurrences annually in the US, resulting in $18 billion in healthcare costs. Current hip protectors have been shown to reduce hip fractures by 50%, but non-compliance is a significant issue, with only 24% of users wearing them consistently. This study aimed to develop an inflatable hip protection system to address the issues of force attenuation and non-compliance. Two prototypes, a garment-mounted and a belt-mounted hip protection system, were designed to inflate with carbon dioxide gas upon detecting a fall, using an energy shunting method to dissipate the impact force away from the hip. Testing using a vertical drop tower showed that both prototypes were able to reduce the peak impact force below the fracture threshold of 2100 N, with a force reduction of approximately 85% for the garment-mounted device and 84% for the belt-mounted device. The proposed hip protector designs have the potential to significantly reduce the number of hip fractures that occur annually in the US.
