Summary

An approach to high-resolution NMR of deuterium in solids is described, using a double-quantum process to excite the m = 1 — 1 transition and monitoring the decay of coherence Q(τ). Fourier transformation yields a deuterium spectrum devoid of quadrupole broadening, and if the deuterium nuclei are dilute, the double-quantum spectrum is a high-resolution one. The technique is applied to a single crystal of oxalic acid dihydrate enriched to ~10% in deuterium, resolving the carboxyl and water deuterium shifts. The anisotropy of the chemical shielding tensor is also measured, yielding an anisotropy of the chemical shift of 60 = 32 ± 4 ppm.
