Summary

This thesis investigates open-cell Ni-Cr metallic foams for abradable compressor sealing, analyzing mechanical properties, braze quality, and non-destructive evaluation techniques. The foam's anisotropic structure leads to anisotropic properties, with compressive strength corresponding to density areas and tensile strength dependent on strut defects. Shear failure is characterized by cell collapse and densification. Machinability tests show fast tool speed and low depth of cuts produce best results. Brazed samples have areas with poor or no braze material coverage due to wicking, leading to weakened bonds and corrosion susceptibility. Ultrasound evaluation shows largest areas of good bond correspond to higher strength samples, with bond quality more important than amount of braze.
