Summary

This thesis investigates the feasibility of accurately modeling sulphur dioxide flux in the lower atmosphere, using data from a monitoring site in the UK. The study explores the variation in the pollutant level, seasonal and diurnal cycles, and compares the measured data with model predictions. The calculation of sulphur dioxide flux is based on three simultaneous concentration measurements corrected for stability height, and the thesis examines the sources of variation in the data. The results suggest that the gas concentrations themselves are the main contributor to the difficulty of modeling sulphur dioxide fluxes, and that the data may be too variable to be modeled. The thesis also explores the use of chaos theory and extreme value analysis to investigate the behavior of the data, and compares the measured and modelled data to see how well they match up.
