Summary

Researchers analyzed the immediate-early (IE) genes of murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV), identifying three IE transcription units. The first unit, ie1, directed the synthesis of an 89,000-molecular-weight polypeptide (pp89), a phosphoprotein that regulates transcription. A second unit, ie2, produced a 1.75-kb RNA and a 43,000-molecular-weight translation product. A third unit, ie3, produced a series of low-abundance RNAs and a 15,000-molecular-weight polypeptide. The study found that IE gene products regulate viral replication and serve as antigens for the host immune system.
