Summary

A Political Ecology of Conservation in the Catskills (1820-1997)," examines the conservation of the Catskills region, located about 100 miles north of New York City. The thesis argues that conservation in the Catskills was driven primarily by capitalist imperatives and urban desires emanating from New York City, rather than environmental goals. The region's nature was commodified by New York City at the beginning of the nineteenth century, shaping the relationship between the Catskills and the city. The thesis complicates the narrative that conservation in the Catskills was an environmental project, instead uncovering the economic, political, and cultural actors that helped enact and sustain conservation in the region. By drawing on theory in political ecology and socionature, the thesis understands societal processes as linked to environmental processes and conservation spaces, and argues that New York State made capitalist imperatives and urban desires compatible with environmentalist ideals through "actually existing conservation.
