Summary

Distance relays are commonly used for transmission line protection, but their performance is affected by fault resistance. This paper presents a new approach using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to improve distance relay performance by considering the impact of ground resistance on faults. The ANN is trained with various patterns and can classify unknown patterns, allowing it to accurately identify fault locations and send trip signals to the corresponding zone relay. The system uses voltage and current signals as inputs and is implemented using MATLAB Simulink. The ANN-based distance protection can effectively handle the impact of fault resistance and improve the overall performance of transmission line protection.
