Summary

The design of high-performance buildings is becoming increasingly complex, with efforts to reduce environmental impact and conserve resources. This study investigates the effect of building morphology on energy performance in four climate zones, considering the shape of the building footprint and placement of primary structural cores. Four building morphologies are analyzed, each representing a high-rise commercial building with equivalent area, height, and material usage. The energy analysis is performed using Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2011, and structural calculations are made by hand. Results present annual heating and cooling loads, structural lateral stiffness, and susceptibility to torsional action under wind loading. The study aims to integrate and optimize structural and energy performance considerations concurrently, analyzing tradeoffs in the design of structural systems for both structural and energy performance.
