Summary

A generalized watershed disturbance metric, based on percent imperviousness, agriculture, and grassland, was used to predict stream biotic conditions, specifically Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) richness, across various environmental settings in the continental United States. The metric accounted for 58% of the variability in EPT richness at 261 nationwide sites, with the rate of decrease in EPT richness being 10 times greater at disturbance values below 15 than above 15. The study found that the relationship between the disturbance metric and EPT richness varied by metropolitan area, with r2 values ranging from 0.04 to 0.74. The results suggest that this generalized metric can provide a useful tool for understanding stream ecological conditions and guiding watershed management practices.
