Summary

Dissection method alters timing of rhythmic motor activity in Drosophila larvae. Intracellular recordings from muscles in dorsal-midline (DM) and off-midline (OM) dissected larvae showed rhythmic activity in all DM-dissected larvae (100%) and in 25 of 27 OM-dissected larvae (93%). Both anterior to posterior (A to P) and P to A waves were observed, with P to A waves being more prevalent. The motor pattern was quantitatively distinct between DM and OM larvae, with OM larvae having shorter burst durations (43-44% decrease), cycle durations (27-29% decrease), and duty cycles (18-23% decrease), and larger quiescence intervals (20-29% increase).
