The project 19NRM03 SI-Hg aims to develop metrologically traceable protocols for certifying mercury gas generators used in the field, ensuring accurate and comparable mercury measurement results. Mercury poses a significant threat to human, animal, and environmental health, and robust measurements are essential for controlling and reducing its concentration in the environment. The project will develop and validate certification protocols for elemental and oxidized mercury gas generators, supporting standardization activities and feeding into existing and new documentary standards. The specific objectives include developing and validating protocols for SI-traceable certification of elemental and oxidized mercury gas generators, organizing a performance evaluation of commercial gas generators, and supporting the development of a calibration system for mercury measurements in the atmosphere. The project will go beyond the state of the art by establishing a traceability chain from the primary mercury gas standard to measurement data in the field, addressing essential performance characteristics of gas generators and analyzers, and obtaining performance evaluation data of mercury gas generators on the market.
