Summary

A ground survey for medium to large mammals was conducted in the Kyankwanzi concession area in Uganda. The survey aimed to estimate the population of these mammals and assess their distribution patterns. The foot-transect survey method was used, and data was collected along laid-out transects. The results showed that the mammal population was low, with Bushbuck having the highest population (4,740), followed by Duiker (1,945), Reedbuck (545), and Vervet monkey (289). The survey also found that human activities such as habitat degradation, charcoal burning, and livestock rearing were threatening the wildlife habitats. The communities need to be educated about the dangers of invasive plants and the importance of conserving the remaining wild animal species. Efforts should be made to protect the species richness in Kyankwanzi and Nsambya sub-counties, and to provide alternative livelihoods for the communities to prevent further declines in wildlife numbers.
