Summary

Depression and anxiety in patients with and without same-sex attraction were compared, focusing on clinical expression, lifestyle factors, and vulnerability indicators. The study found that 7% of patients reported any same-sex orientation, and clinical expression of depression and anxiety did not differ in relation to sexual attraction. However, same-sex attracted women reported more drug use, and men with same-sex attraction reported more sexual abuse during childhood. The findings suggest that substance use might be a coping mechanism for women with same-sex attraction, while stressful childhood experiences might contribute to the etiology of depression and anxiety in same-sex attracted men.
