The Rainforest Alliance has been working with youth and community partners in Calakmul, Mexico since 2016 to prepare young people for a meaningful and financially viable future within their communities. The organization aims to combat out-migration and ensure the continuation of sustainable farming and forestry by providing youth with access to employment and education. Calakmul is a richly biodiverse region, home to over 80% of the plant species in the Yucatán Peninsula, and contains the most extensive tropical forest in Mexico. The communities around the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve have been sustainably managing the forest, but youth and women face limited opportunities to participate in local government and decision-making. The Rainforest Alliance has implemented capacity-building courses and experiential learning activities to build young people's understanding of the region's biodiversity and introduce them to experts in the field. The organization has provided over 250 hours of coursework to 70 young people and created experiential learning opportunities for 40 young people, aiming to bridge existing communication gaps and foster trust-based relationships between young people and community members.
