Summary

Researchers conducted a pilot ex vivo study on non-thermal ablation of human prostate adenocarcinoma tissue using boiling histotripsy, a high-intensity focused ultrasound technique. The study used a custom-made transducer to generate a 1.5-MHz ultrasound field and applied a sonication protocol to an ex vivo human prostate tissue sample containing prostate cancer. The results showed that boiling histotripsy can mechanically ablate prostate cancer tissue, producing liquefaction of the targeted tissue volume and similar tissue fractionation into subcellular fragments as in benign prostate parenchyma. The study demonstrates the feasibility of using boiling histotripsy for non-thermal ablation of human prostate cancer tissue.
