Summary

The surface of Mars cannot sustain liquid water today, but evidence suggests water was present during the Noachian era, resulting in saline and sulfur-rich surface waters. Researchers studied the Colour Peak spring system in the Canadian High Arctic, a terrestrial analogue environment with similar chemistry, to understand organisms that could have persisted under such conditions. Analysis confirmed Colour Peak's chemical composition is similar to modelled martian fluid, justifying its use as an analogue environment. The microbial community was dominated by bacteria associated with sulfur species oxidation and carbon dioxide fixation, and Gibbs energy values indicated this metabolism is viable in both modelled and environmental proxies for former martian aqueous environments.
