Summary

Corn gluten meal, a byproduct of corn processing, was found to inhibit root formation in several plant species, including crabgrass, and can be used as a natural preemergence weed control in turf. Studies showed that applying corn gluten meal to the soil surface before seeding reduced stand establishment of creeping bentgrass seedlings, with the greatest concentration of the inhibitory substance in the corn gluten meal. Field studies demonstrated that corn gluten meal applied at various rates reduced crabgrass infestation by 50-95% when applied 1 week before germination. The material contains approximately 10% nitrogen by weight, making it a good natural fertilizer for turf.
