Summary

Dwarf galaxies in observed and simulated galaxy clusters are studied to understand environmental properties and evolution. Galaxy clusters have thousands of low-mass galaxies, with hundreds having stellar masses of 10^8 ≤ M⋆ ≤ 10^9.5 M⊙ and magnitudes of −16 ≤ Mr ≤ −19 mag. These dwarf galaxies are not as faint and diffuse as Milky Way satellites and have a complex structure, particularly the dominant early-type dwarf population. Comparisons of models and observations can serve as a tool for studying the evolutionary history of low-mass galaxy populations in today's clusters. Semi-analytic models based on high-resolution N-body simulations can reach down to dwarf masses and represent a large volume encompassing many galaxy clusters and groups. The study focuses on the semi-analytic model of Guo et al. (2011) and illustrates advantages and limitations of such comparisons. Dwarf galaxies are ideal probes of the characteristics and evolutionary history of an environment, as they are abundant and vulnerable to external influence. The study reveals a broad diversity of dwarf galaxy properties, including passive early-type dwarfs, which are the most abundant galaxy population in clusters.
