Summary

Planet Earth is a warm, wet, greenhouse, volcanic planet that formed 4.6 billion years ago from stardust. Early in its history, it was bombarded by asteroids, making it larger, and was very hot, with water vaporizing due to impacts. Around 3.8 billion years ago, it cooled, and liquid water formed, allowing simple life to emerge. This life was likely bacteria that could survive in extreme environments. As the planet evolved, life diversified, and around 2.7 billion years ago, a climate change occurred, causing the planet to become a "snowball." The end of this ice age led to increased diversity of life, and around 2.4 billion years ago, oxygen started accumulating in the atmosphere, killing off some bacteria and changing the planet's chemistry. Life continued to evolve, with multicellular life emerging around 583 million years ago. The planet's history is marked by constant interactions between life, the atmosphere, oceans, and rocks, with climate changes shaping the course of life on Earth.
