Summary

Earthquakes are clumpy, occurring in clusters with periods of high and low activity, making it challenging to identify patterns. In a typical year, there are 16 earthquakes of magnitude 7 or larger, but their occurrence is uneven, with some years having more than others. The number of large earthquakes has varied significantly over the decades, with some periods having more than others. Despite the availability of more advanced seismographs, the patchy occurrence of big earthquakes is real, and predicting them remains elusive due to the limited data window. The only somewhat predictable earthquake pattern is aftershocks, which follow larger quakes, but even their duration and strength are variable. Currently, there are active aftershock sequences in Alaska, and the king of current sequences is beneath the sea floor off Japan's main island, with aftershocks still occurring over seven years after the main earthquake.
