Summary

The Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group is sponsoring the Earthquake-Tsunami Room at the Humboldt County Fair for the 20th consecutive year. The room will provide preparedness information and the latest news on earthquakes and tsunamis. Recent events include the cessation of the Kilauea eruption, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Indonesia that is now the deadliest earthquake of 2018, and a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in Alaska. The Indonesian earthquake affected both residents and tourists, with at least 1000 tourists trapped on the Gili Islands. The Alaskan earthquake was centered on the North Slope, 25 miles from the Beaufort Sea, and is one of the largest ever recorded in the region. The Earthquake-Tsunami Room will also feature an elephant, symbolizing the "elephant in the room," and will ask visitors to write down reasons why they haven't prepared for an emergency and suggest simple actions they can take to prepare.
