Summary

Researchers analyzed the ecomorphology of Carnivora, specifically the mandible shape and size of large carnivorans, to test for convergent evolution due to adaptations such as hypercarnivory and durophagy. They found that hypercarnivores exhibit smaller volumes of the multidimensional shape and form space, but this pattern is only significant when hunting behavior is taken into account. Durophages share areas of the morphospace, but this appears to be due to contingency. The study identified a stronger phylogenetic signal in mandibular shape than in size, and found that the mandible shape of solitary hunters evolved slowly compared to other carnivorans, suggesting that the need for strong bite force and robust mandible overrides phylogenetic effect.
