Edward Emerson Barnard foi um dos maiores astrónomos do século 19, conhecido por descobrir visualmente o quinto satélite de Júpiter, Amalthea, e numerosos cometas e nebulosas, conquistando fama internacional. Nasceu em 1857 em Nashville, Tennessee, e começou a trabalhar num estúdio fotográfico aos 9 anos, desenvolvendo habilidades que mais tarde o ajudariam em sua carreira astronômica. Barnard construiu seu próprio telescópio e começou a observar a Lua, Vénus e planetas, iniciando sua busca por cometas com a orientação de Simon Newcomb. Trabalhou na Universidade de Vanderbilt e no Observatório de Lick, onde fez várias descobertas importantes, incluindo a de Amalthea em 1892.
