Researchers investigated the effects of 2000-2050 global changes in climate and anthropogenic emissions on US ozone air quality using a global chemical transport model. They found that changes in anthropogenic emissions reduced summer daily maximum 8-hour ozone by 2-15 ppb, while climate change caused a 2-5 ppb increase over the Midwest and northeastern US. Ozone pollution episodes were more affected by climate change, with effects exceeding 10 ppb in these regions. A "climate change penalty" was defined as the additional emission controls needed to meet a given ozone air quality target, with a 50% reduction in US NOx emissions required in the 2050 climate to reach the same target as a 40% reduction in the 2000 climate.
