Summary

The manufacture of corrugated box-board and paper bags is a major industry with about 1,500 corrugated box plants and a similar number of bag plants in the United States. Corrugated board is the prime structural material for boxes and shipping containers due to its low cost and high strength. However, the disposal of wastewater generated in these plants has become a problem due to high levels of organics and heavy metals.

The Vibratory Shear Enhanced Processing (VSEP) system, developed by New Logic International, uses nanofiltration membrane modules to treat effluent streams, reducing BOD, COD, TDS, TSS, and color bodies. The VSEP system can generate a permeate stream that meets water discharge or reuse criteria, and preconcentrate solids prior to final evaporation or drying.

A process schematic for treating box plant effluent using a VSEP system is presented, showing the reduction of load on the dryer and improvement of process efficiency. The VSEP produces a concentrated waste stream and a permeate stream that can be recycled or discharged. Nearly 90 to 95% of the wastewater is recovered as treated water, while less than 5 to 10% is fed to the dryer as concentrate.
