Summary

Global models struggle to represent the West African Monsoon water cycle, with poor representations of deep convection's diurnal cycle and organisation. Convection-permitting simulations using the Met Office Unified Model provide a more realistic distribution and diurnal cycle of convection, significantly impacting the mean Sahel-Sahara pressure gradient and monsoon flow. Explicit convection improves rainfall totals, with increased evapotranspiration compensated by moisture flux convergence, creating self-sustaining heavier Sahel rains that interact with the monsoon flow to bring more moisture into the region.
