Summary

Researchers studied the spatio-temporal variability of riverine cold water patches in the lower Ain River, France, using thermal infrared airborne remote sensing. They identified four types of patches: tributary plumes, cold side channels, side seeps, and gravel bar seeps. Logistic regression analysis showed that the distribution of these patches is related to geomorphologic indicators, such as local geology, lateral river mobility, and bar development. The study found that interannual variability in the occurrence and spatial extent of side seeps and gravel bar seeps is related to groundwater level fluctuations, while cold side channels exhibited greater interannual stability. The results can be used to target areas with high densities of stable and spatially extensive cold water patches, which are considered ecological refuges.
