Summary

Researchers used tube waves in a shallow VSP experiment to image hydraulic fractures at the Median Tectonic Line in Japan. They developed a new method to analyze multiply generated and scattered tube waves due to multiple fractures, using an inverse operator to focus the tube waves to their source. The method was applied to a 250m deep borehole, where multiple tube waves were observed, and the results indicated that open fractures had a more dominant effect on tube wave generation and scattering than cataclasites.
