Summary

Soil moisture plays a central role in partitioning available energy at the land surface between sensible and latent heat flux to the atmosphere, with dry soils leading to water-limited evapotranspiration, increased land surface temperature, and sensible heat flux. Global climate models disagree on how soil moisture limits the surface energy budget, and evaluation is challenging due to scarce observational data. A new methodology uses satellite observations of land surface temperature to evaluate soil moisture stress on surface fluxes, with results showing that 97% of the observed surface warms up during dry spells, and 73% warms faster than the atmosphere, indicating water-stressed conditions.
