Summary

OH-defects in quartz can serve as an archive for its host rock's formation, and detrital quartz from different sources can show distinctive distributions of OH defect contents, quantifiable using IR-spectroscopy. Application of this technique to river sands from southwestern Japan separates them into two provenances based on OH-defect content: OH-defect poor quartz in central Honshu and a wider range of OH-defect contents in Shikoku. The lower OH-defect contents in central Honshu are hypothesized to result from erosion of rock from lower crustal levels following the collision of the Izu- and Honshu arcs, and the OH-defect signal is traceable throughout the sediment record, making it a legitimate tool for provenance analysis.
