Summary

Electron-biomolecule interactions are studied to understand biomolecule damage and ion fragmentation in mass spectrometric analysis. Low energy electron capture experiments on amino acids, derivatives, and peptides provided insights into fragmentation mechanisms. Results showed that electrons with energy between 1-2 eV are captured by shape resonances of the π* orbital, leading to formation of z-1 and c type ions, with dominant ions being (M-H)- or z-1 ions for compounds with C-terminal carboxylic acids.
