Summary

Wildlife tourism can increase stress in various species, affecting welfare and behavior. This study assessed the impact of wildlife tourism on African elephants' physiological stress levels in Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa. The researchers collected dung samples from 13 individually identified elephants over 15 months and analyzed the faecal glucocorticoid metabolite (fGCM) concentrations. They found a significant positive correlation between tourist numbers and fGCM concentrations, with a 112% increase in fGCM concentrations during periods of high tourist pressure. The study suggests that reserve managers should provide potential alleviation measures for elephants during high tourist pressure, such as ensuring refuge areas are available. This may be particularly important for elephants that have had traumatic experiences with humans in the past.
