Summary

The Future Resilience for African Cities and Lands (FRACTAL) project aims to address the challenge of providing accessible, timely, applicable, and defensible climate information to decision-makers in southern African cities. To achieve this, FRACTAL employed an Embedded Researcher (ER) approach, which involves embedding researchers within city governments to co-produce actionable knowledge. The ER approach is a transdisciplinary approach that bridges the gap between science and action by integrating across disciplines and professions. The approach has several benefits, including building trust and familiarity across boundaries, and has been implemented in five cities, with lessons learned focusing on the benefits and challenges of the approach.
