Summary

High-altitude ice crystals in convective weather cause engine damage and power loss in commercial airplanes, occurring at altitudes above 22,000 feet with no airframe icing and light turbulence. At least 100 jet engine power-loss events have been recorded since 1990, mostly in Asia, with engines recovering quickly. Ice crystals, as small as 40 microns, form in strong convective weather, partially melting and sticking to warm engine surfaces, and can be invisible to on-board weather radar. Flight near convective weather, even without radar returns, can be in ice crystal conditions, and pilot reporting of such events is crucial. Ice crystal icing can occur deep in the engine, affecting both old and new generation jet engines, and types of power-loss events include surge, stall, flameout, and engine damage.
