Summary

This study examines the effects of nitrite toxicity on the blood of freshwater fish Cirrhinus mrigala, focusing on hematocrit (HCT) and mean cell volume (MCV) values. The fish were exposed to sublethal concentrations of nitrite for 35 days. The results show that HCT values increased by 4.58% on the 7th day but decreased by 8.79%, 8.33%, 12.53%, and 13.01% on the 14th, 21st, 28th, and 35th days, respectively. MCV values increased by 2.653% on the 7th day but decreased by 3.71%, 9.35%, and 7.28% on the 14th, 21st, and 28th days, with a marginal increase of 0.38% on the 35th day. The study suggests that nitrite exposure can cause changes in the hematological parameters of fish, which can be used as indicators of environmental stress.
