Summary

Researchers incorporated parameterizations for orographic and non-orographic gravity waves into the GEM-Mars general circulation model (GCM) to study their effects on the Martian atmosphere. The model simulations showed that including both types of gravity waves led to a cooling effect of around 20 K in the winter polar region, improving agreement with Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) observations. The results suggest that non-orographic gravity waves have a significant impact on the temperature and dynamics of the upper atmosphere, particularly during solstice periods. Further testing is needed to refine the parameterizations and better understand the effects of gravity waves on the Martian atmosphere.
