Summary

Gaia, ESA's global space astrometry mission, will map one thousand million stars and hundreds of thousands of other celestial objects in our galaxy when it launches by the end of 2011. It will carry the largest digital camera in the Solar System, with over 100 separate cameras and about 1000 million pixels. Gaia will scan the entire sky, monitoring each target star up to 70 times over a five-year period, and detect every celestial object down to about a million times fainter than the unaided human eye can see. The mission aims to provide a vast improvement in our knowledge of the early formation of our galaxy and its subsequent evolution.
