Summary

This study examined gender differences in the effects of Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) on muscular peak power and electromyogram (EMG) of leg muscles. 39 participants (20 males, 19 females) underwent two Wingate power test sessions, one with and one without BFR. Results showed that males have higher absolute peak power than females, but when adjusted to leg lean mass, the difference diminished without BFR. Males generated higher peak power per mV of myoelectric activity, indicating more efficient muscle fiber recruitment. BFR had the same effects on males and females during maximal power exercise. Females exhibited higher EMG per kilogram of leg lean mass than males, and males dropped power faster than females with or without BFR. There was no significant gender difference in the effects of BFR on peak power, EMG, or power-drop speed when adjusted to leg lean mass.
