Summary

Hedgerows, composed of trees, shrubs, and grasses, border farm fields and provide habitat for various organisms. The Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust has planted hedgerows on farmland in the lower Fraser River Delta since 1995. Analysis of historical changes in woody habitat from 1966 to 2012 showed a decline from 1966 to 1986, but little change from 1966 to 2012, with a 30% increase in planted woody habitat from 1986 to 2012, partly due to the trust's efforts. The estimated cost to plant all Delta field edges and roadways with hedgerows is $25 million. Future scenario analyses considered "Business as Usual," "Maximize Hedgerows," and "Agricultural Expansion," with the latter resulting in significant carbon loss and reduced patch size.
