Summary

Between January 1965 and March 1967, 4926 observations were made on 20 species of petrels feeding in the Southern Ocean from the research ship USNS Eltanin. Eleven feeding methods were distinguished, with surface seizing (49.1%), dipping (25.2%), and surface plunging (6%) being the most common. Seven species foraged entirely at night, and five fed by day only, with food recorded being chiefly crustaceans and squid. Submergence time and prey-handling time were also recorded for some species. The observations were made possible by bright decklights, powerful bridge lights, or moonlight, and took place during eight Eltanin cruises in the Southern Ocean.
